Family Support

Immigrant and newcomer families in Canada face several unique challenges, such as cultural clashes within families when children adapt to the new culture faster than their parents. This can lead to conflicts over social norms and academic expectations. Parents often feel disrespected and struggle to balance their cultural identity with integrating into Canadian society.

Another significant issue among racialized immigrant families are the prolonged family separation between the children and parents. Parents who immigrated to Canada left family members behind, and upon reuniting after years of separation, face complex issues like family conflicts, strained relationships, adjustment problems, youth depression, loss of life goals, and dropping out of school. Several research studies show that Filipino youth in particular are less likely to hold a degree compared to their parents or peers from other racialized groups, highlighting the need for tailored support.
