They are often found in low-paid, unstable care worker jobs with few benefits and protections. These jobs are essential but undervalued, and women in these roles earn less and save less, making it hard to escape poverty. They also face barriers like having their qualifications overlooked, gender discrimination, and limited job security, which makes it difficult to find stable employment and advance professionally. This economic instability and lack of access to supportive networks makes it difficult for them to build social connections and fully participate in the Canadian society. In response, KMC established the Kababayan Caregiver Network in 2005 to provide a supportive community for racialized, low-income women experiencing social isolation. Building on this network, we developed programs and services specifically designed to address their unique needs, help them overcome life challenges, and secure better employment opportunities. Whether it’s applying to post-secondary programs, exploring career options, or simply trying to build connections in a new environment, the journey can be challenging. But it doesn’t have to be walked alone. Through this program, menteees will: Connect with professionals or fellow students who can offer insights into different careers and post-secondary pathways Receive guidance and encouragement to help build confidence and a sense of direction Develop realistic career or academic goals , and learn how to take actionable steps to achieve them Strengthen networking and communication skills, with opportunities to expand personal and professional connections Gain a trusted mentor who can answer questions, provide support, and celebrate progress along the way How it works? Assigned Mentor : Based on the information you shared in the registration form, we will match you with a mentor who aligns with your career or academic interests. One-on-One Support : After you're matched, you'll start your mentorship journey with personalized guidance and resources tailored to your goals. You and your mentor can connect in person, online, or by phone, whatever works best for both of you. Group Activities: You’ll also be invited to group sessions like networking events, workshops, and community gatherings to build skills and connect with other youth and mentors. Who are the mentors? Our mentors are immigrant professionals, university students, and community leaders from a wide range of backgrounds and fields. Many of them were once newcomers or immigrants themselves, and they understand the unique challenges of settling into life in Canada. They know what it’s like to navigate post-secondary education, apply for jobs, or build a career path in a new country. They’ve been where you are, and now they want to help you move forward and reach your goals. How to apply for the program? Mentees To join, mentees must be 15-29 years old and either: Permanent Residents Convention Refugees Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) visa holders Temporary Resident Visa Holder (for Families Affected by the Gaza Crisis) Register to be a Mentee Mentors Are you an immigrant who has successfully navigated post-secondary education or established yourself in your career? By becoming a mentor, you can support immigrant and newcomer youth in gaining clarity and confidence as they plan their future. You will provide career guidance, advice, networking opportunities, and support for post-secondary pathways, while also helping them build resilience and motivation as they navigate life in Canada. This is more than just volunteering. It is a meaningful way to invest in the next generation of leaders while strengthening your own leadership, communication, and coaching skills. Our first location opens downtown, launching our legacy of service to newcomers in Canada. 1981 Kababayan joins the opposition to the Klu Klux Klan in Parkdale, where the white supremacist organization has opened a Canadian branch. Following a grassroots advocacy campaign led by community partners, including Kababayan, the KKK branch disbands. 1985-88 KMC’s first efforts to combat violence against women, particularly migrant care workers, begin. In collaboration with the Network of Filipino-Canadian Women, we release two research publications on the subject, “Mail Order Brides: To Honor and Obey,” and “From Fright to Flight.” 1990 Kababayan begins offering programs specifically targeted to address the needs of youth, women, and seniors. Throughout the 90s, KMC hosts summer camps specifically for these groups, offering opportunities for bonding and recreation in a safe and welcoming space. 1993 After incidents of racial profiling against Filipino teenagers, Kababayan forms the Task Force to Stop Racism at Scarborough Town Centre, leading over 100 other organizations in a successful effort to repeal discriminatory policies. We produce the play “Mall Fright” to document the incidents. 2000 KMC establishes the “Creating Access to Regulated Employment (CARE) for Nurses” project in partnership with WoodGreen Community Services, St. Michael’s Hospital and the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care, funded by the MayTree Foundation. This project helps hundreds of internationally-trained nurses start practicing in Ontario. 2005 We establish the Kababayan Caregiver Network to support the specific needs of live-in caregivers and other newcomer care workers. In addition to skill-building workshops and individual counselling, we host plenty of social activities to combat social isolation. 2013 To reflect our commitment to being inclusive and welcoming to all, our operating name is changed to Kababayan Multicultural Centre and our second location opens in North York, expanding our ability to offer programs and services to newcomers city-wide. 2020 As the pandemic restricts in-person activities, we begin offering our services virtually. Both our group and individual services are available online from this year onward, which allows us to reach a wider range of clients. 2022 In 2022, we celebrate our 45th anniversary and significantly expanded our staff, enabling us to reach and assist even more community members. Since then, we have welcomed thousands of newcomers to Canada, providing them with vital information and services to help them thrive. Canada is witnessing a rapid rise in immigration, specifically among seniors who arrived in the country through family reunification programs. In 2022 alone, we welcomed 27,255 permanent residents through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), contributing to what is now 30% of Canada’s senior population. In GTA, nearly two-thirds of the seniors are immigrants, leading to a great diversity among them, which may introduce an elevated risk of social isolation due to challenges such as language barriers, generational gaps, and cultural differences. This project aims to address these issues by providing seniors with opportunities to build connections and a sense of belongingness with Canadian society, help raise awareness of the challenges faced by newcomer seniors along with practical advice from established seniors, and the opportunity for our volunteer established seniors to play an active role in mentoring and guiding newcomers. What does KMC offer through this project? Settlement Workshops for Newcomer Seniors We offer a series of workshops for newcomer seniors that cover key settlement topics in Canada, including housing, income support and benefits, healthcare services, transportation, and senior-specific programs and services. Mentoring Opportunities: Established Seniors Empowering Newcomers Inspired by the established seniors' desire to play an active role in helping newcomers, we offer mentoring opportunities between established seniors and newcomers of all ages. Seniors possess decades of experience and wisdom in various aspects of life, allowing them to provide valuable insight and guidance on career paths, entrepreneurship, social engagement, relationships, and adapting to the new life here in Canada. Seniors’ Voices Through Digital Stories Promoting the inclusion of the newcomer senior into Canadian society, through this, we encourage seniors to share their journeys and experiences using short-form videos. They will be actively collaborating with creative professionals to ensure proper representation of their stories through these videos, which are then shared on different digital platforms to reach a broader audience. Through this project, we aim to support the inclusion of racialized and newcomer seniors by prioritizing their smooth integration, promoting healthy aging, and celebrating diversity.
