Equity, Diversity & Inclusion We foster an environment that is welcoming, respectful and equitable for our clients, staff and community members. 1977-1988: New beginnings and advocacy In 1977, Kababayan Community Service Centre, later renamed Kababayan Multicultural Centre, is founded to serve Filipino immigrants. Our first location opens downtown, launching our legacy of service to newcomers in Canada. In 1981, Kababayan joins the opposition to the Klu Klux Klan in Parkdale, where the white supremacist organization has opened a Canadian branch. Following a grassroots advocacy campaign led by community partners, including Kababayan, the KKK branch disbands. From 1985 to 1988, KMC’s first efforts to combat violence against women, particularly migrant care workers, begin. In collaboration with the Network of Filipino-Canadian Women, we release two research publications on the subject, “Mail Order Brides: To Honor and Obey,” and “From Fright to Flight.” 1998-2007: Building access to employment In 2000, KMC establishes the “Creating Access to Regulated Employment (CARE) for Nurses” project in partnership with WoodGreen Community Services, St. Michael’s Hospital and the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care, funded by the MayTree Foundation. This project helps hundreds of internationally-trained nurses start practicing in Ontario. We establish the Kababayan Caregiver Network in 2005 to support the specific needs of live-in caregivers and other newcomer care workers. In addition to skill-building workshops and individual counselling, we host plenty of social activities to combat social isolation. We expand our youth programs, collaborating with schools to offer individual and group activities for newcomers between the ages of 15 and 30. Throughout the 90s, KMC hosts summer camps specifically for these groups, offering opportunities for bonding and recreation in a safe and welcoming space. After incidents of racial profiling against Filipino teenagers in 1993, Kababayan forms the Task Force to Stop Racism at Scarborough Town Centre, leading over 100 other organizations in a successful effort to repeal discriminatory policies. We produce the play “Mall Fright” to document the incidents. Kababayan begins offering programs specifically targeted to address the needs of youth, women, and seniors. 2008-2017: Expanding our reach After significant expansion of staff and resources from 2008 to 2010, our operating name officially changes to Kababayan Multicultural Centre in 2013 and our second location opens in North York, expanding our ability to offer programs and services to newcomers city-wide. The Bathurst-Finch hub hosts seven organizations in addition to Kababayan, creating a centre for newcomers to access essential support they need to thrive in Canada. They are often found in low-paid, unstable care worker jobs with few benefits and protections. These jobs are essential but undervalued, and women in these roles earn less and save less, making it hard to escape poverty. They also face barriers like having their qualifications overlooked, gender discrimination, and limited job security, which makes it difficult to find stable employment and advance professionally. This economic instability and lack of access to supportive networks makes it difficult for them to build social connections and fully participate in the Canadian society. In response, KMC established the Kababayan Caregiver Network in 2005 to provide a supportive community for racialized, low-income women experiencing social isolation. Building on this network, we developed programs and services specifically designed to address their unique needs, help them overcome life challenges, and secure better employment opportunities. Through our wide range of free services, including supportive counseling, skills-building workshops, and recreational activities, KMC aims to empower these women, ensuring they have the resources and support needed to thrive in their personal and professional lives. They have given out FREE gently-used, good-quality furniture and housewares from generous donors to different families and individuals. That is why we have partnered with Furniture Bank to provide valuable support to newcomers and refugees in Ontario, Canada, who need an extra hand as they settle into their new lives. Please note that while the furniture is not new, it has been professionally cleaned, restored, and made ready for reuse. Eligibility Criteria: New to Canada / New Occupant within 12 months of arrival date Recently transitioned from homelessness within the last 12 months Experienced loss of furniture in the last 12 months due to fire, flood, pest infestation, or another exceptional circumstance Be affiliated with a program at Kababayan Multicultural Centre How Furniture Bank Works: Get a referral from us to Furniture Bank. You won't be able to apply directly to Furniture Bank for their services so make sure to register with us or get in touch with your KMC counsellor. Review process by Furniture Bank. Once your application is submitted, the Furniture Bank will send us a confirmation email along with payment instructions. This is a subsidized, but not free service. The furnishings you receive are no cost, but you must pre-pay for delivery to secure your appointment. There is a one-time fee of $300 , which covers transportation and delivery of the furniture to your home—regardless of your location. This is a fixed, non-refundable fee charged directly by the Furniture Bank. Complete the Referral Payment Form. You can get a copy of this from your KMC counsellor. Prepare for furniture selection. List down what furniture you need and accurately measure your space to ensure your chosen furniture fits what you need. You won't be able to return or exchange furniture once delivered. Visit Furniture Bank for furniture selection. After you complete the payment and notify your counsellor, Furniture Bank will schedule an appointment for you to visit the warehouse at Etobicoke to select your furniture. Delivery of your furniture. Furniture Bank will schedule a delivery of your chosen furniture to your home when you visit that day. Delivery typically happens within 2–3 days after your visit . Is there a fee for Furniture Bank's services? Yes, there’s a $300 flat fee for furniture delivery paid to Furniture Bank. This covers transportation, insurance, and the moving team. How do I pay the delivery fee? You can pay via credit card or debit card. What happens if I miss my delivery appointment? Someone should be able to receive the delivery on the delivery date. You'll receive a call from the delivery service a day before the appointed delivery date for confirmation. For rescheduling, contact your KMC counsellor. What areas does Furniture Bank serve? Deliveries are scheduled Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, unless prearranged with Furniture Bank. You’ll receive a call 30 minutes before the delivery team arrives. Can I pick up furniture from Furniture Bank myself? No, all furniture is delivered by the Furniture Bank team. They don’t offer a client pick-up option. What if the furniture doesn't fit in my home? It’s important to accurately measure your space before visiting Furniture Bank for furniture selection. They won't process returns or exchanges on delivery day due to size issues.
