In today’s world, having access to a reliable computer isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s essential. Whether it's completing schoolwork, applying for jobs, accessing services, or staying in touch with loved ones, technology plays a vital role in our daily lives.
For newcomer and immigrant families in Canada, the challenge of settling into a new country often comes with financial pressures. Many are starting from scratch—searching for employment, adjusting to a new school system, and learning how to navigate unfamiliar services. Amid all this, purchasing brand-new devices can take a toll on a newcomer’s finances.
That’s why our partnership with Renewed Computer Technology (RCT) is so important.

What is RCT and How Does the Program Work?
Renewed Computer Technology (RCT) is a non-profit charitable organization that refurbishes donated computers and distributes them at affordable rates to individuals and families with limited income. Their mission is simple: to empower communities in an increasingly tech-driven society with affordable, renewed computers and access to digital tools.
Through our partnership with RCT, Kababayan Multicultural Centre (KMC) is able to refer eligible clients to access quality renewed computers, bundled with software and accessories, at a significantly reduced cost.
Why the Partnership with Renewed Computer Technology Matters
1. Helping Newcomers Navigate Daily Life in Canada
Imagine trying to search for housing, apply for jobs, or complete school assignments without a computer. While public libraries and community centres offer public access computers, they can be limited in availability, convenience, and privacy.
With personal devices, newcomers can confidently:
Access government services and immigration resources
Attend virtual classes and training programs
Create resumes and submit job applications
Pay bills and manage online banking securely
Use translation and communication tools
Having a computer at home turns uncertainty into empowerment.
2. Strengthening Connections
Moving to a new country often means being separated from family and close friends. Technology provides a crucial emotional lifeline.
Whether it’s a weekly video call with a parent overseas or exchanging messages with a local community, access to a personal computer allows immigrants to:
Maintain regular communication with loved ones
Share milestones and updates with family abroad
Participate in community and cultural events online
Staying socially connected plays a huge role in reducing loneliness, improving mental health, and making the transition to a new life in Canada more bearable.
3. Building Digital Skills and Confidence
For many newcomers, especially older adults or those unfamiliar with technology, using a computer can feel intimidating. That’s why digital literacy is just as important as device access.
Thanks to the laptops received through RCT, participants in KMC’s digital workshops are now able to:
Practice using essential tools like email, Zoom, and Microsoft Office
Learn to navigate online forms and websites independently
Gain confidence that translates to employment and education
Clients who take advantage of this opportunity also has the chance to master digital literacy in the comfort of their own homes. Technology opens the door, but it’s training and encouragement that help someone walk through it.
Success Story

One of our Kababayan clients, Angelita Cordes, experienced firsthand how even small changes can make a big impact:
“The laptop I received has helped me a lot, because I usually just use my phone. Some of the websites [I visit] when I'm using my phone don't go through, but now, things work, and that makes everything easier."
For Angelita, it wasn’t just about getting a new device. It was about being able to access important websites without stress, complete everyday tasks with ease, and feel more confident navigating online. Sometimes, it’s the little things, like seeing a working website or a bigger screen, that can open the door to a more connected, empowered life.
